Construction Underway at Luther Burbank Regional Sports Complex

The City of Sacramento and the Sacramento City Unified School District have partnered on the development of a Regional Sports Complex at Luther Burbank High School.  These state-of-the-art athletic facilities will be available for use by both the school and the community.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 2009 for the $9.3 million Phase 1 of the project, with completion expected in 2011.

Phase 1 plans include a synthetic football field, soccer field and track; new bleachers; a concession stand; ticket booths; and classroom space.

Funding for this portion of the project will come from Measure I bonds passed by voters in 2002.

Phases 2 and 3 of the project (approximately $15.2 million) plan to include tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, and a new parking lot.  The city plans to apply for a second round of Proposition 84 money when it becomes available to finance these phases.

May Showers Bring Flowers

at Sears, Florin Towne Centre
The recent heavy rains, followed by warm temperatures, have brought out the flowers along the Florin Road corridor.  We know it can be hard to find the time to stop and smell the roses, so we did it for you – and took some photos to share.

at FAMSA, Florin Towne Centre

Many thanks to the merchants and property owners who keep our district looking “Clean and Green”.  And special thanks to our cleanup crew, House of Hope.  Since 2008 they have worked tirelessly five-days a week, every week (rain or shine!) to remove graffiti, dumped items, and illegally posted signs along the corridor.  In 2010 they collected over 2,000 bags of trash from the public right-of-way and returned hundreds of abandoned shopping carts to stores.

Florin Road Business Walk Reaches 200 Merchants

Thank you to all the volunteers who made our May 19th Business Walk
a success!

We had forty representatives from the City and County of Sacramento, the Sacramento Police Department, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, SMUD, neighborhood associations and community groups, corridor property owners and merchants, and the staff of the Florin Road Partnership.

Together we were able to meet with almost 200 businesses from Tamoshanter Way to Highway 99 to discuss their needs and concerns.
City staff will compile the results of the walk to help develop resources to assist our merchants.  We look forward to sharing their report with you soon.

Thank you to Donaldson Properties for hosting this event at the Florin Road Arts and Business Complex at 2251 Florin Road, Sacramento.  Participants toured the facility to view the 3,000 square feet of multicultural murals that are part of the Sojourner Truth Museum and Multicultural Arts Development Center.  To our knowledge, this is the only art museum in South Sacramento.   Drop by the museum today for your own tour!

Shop Small, May 16-20, 2011

During National Small Business Week, May 16-20, 2011,
remember to support your locally-owned, independent stores

that contribute to our local economy and the diversity of our community.
Small businesses have generated 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs each year over the last decade.

And for every $100 spent in a locally-owned, independent store, $68 is returned to the community through taxes, payroll, and other operating expenses (according to The 3/50 Project).
So now that you have the statistics, what are you waiting for?

Go out and Shop Small today!

Yes, Virginia, there IS such a thing as a free lunch (and breakfast, too!)

The Florin Road Partnership, in conjunction with the City of Sacramento, the County of Sacramento and SMUD, will host a Business Walk along Florin Road on Thursday, May 19 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
